WHAT IS AQUAPONIC

Aquaponic is a combination of the aquarium and hydroponic systems. It is a symbiotic system life cycle of aquatic plants and interdependent with each other to produce fresh agro-products and high quality.

In natural conditions, waste excretion of farmed aquatic life in the tank / aquarium will cause the water to be toxic to aquatic life, but this toxicity, the opposite will turn into a high nutritional contribution of nutrients and nourishment for plants grown hydroponically.

Aquaponic system will convey water from the tank's aquatic life that are toxic to plants and it will absorb and get full nutrients derived from aquatic excretion above. After that, naturally, the plant will supply clean and free of water toxic to the aquatic life.

Aquatic life that live in fresh water are very suitable to be applied to the system Aquaponic as most plants need water to live. Wildlife saltwater can also be used, but the crop to be used must also be in accordance with the above salt water.

This system will ensure that the natural cycle will continue without interruption. Water only needs to be added once only to compensate for lack of water due to absorption by the plants, evaporation naturally by air and also when the last fish tank cleaned.

FUNCTION
Akuaponik consist of two (2) main sections:

         1. Aquaculture Division: Used for breeding aquatic life
         2. Hydroponic Parts: Used to grow food

The most important equipment in the application Aquaponic system is pumping water. Without the water pump, this system will not work properly because the water pump could be regarded as the 'heart' of the system. This water pump that will bring wastewater reservoir aquatic life that are toxic to the plant to be absorbed as a source of nutrients for crop growth.

HISTORY

As with other systems, Aquaponic system also has its own history, although there is some debate about the beginning of its existence.

In ancient history, say, ethnic Aztec (a tribe that dominates the whole great Mexico Mesoamerica, who lived around the 14th century to 16) who started this Aquaponic system use in their daily lives.

In Asia, South China and Thailand is said to have long practiced this method in paddy Aquaponic where there is a combination of aquatic life such as catfish, eel, puyu and many more species of freshwater fish.

In Western countries, scientists at New Alchemy Institute (Cape Cod, 1969-1991) began experimental procedures on how to convert fish waste to manure excretion that can be used as a source of plant growth.

The USA, Canada, Barbados (South America) and Australia is beginning to popularize this Aquaponic system found in large scale and small scale. They began to diversify aquatic life and plants are also suitable to be implemented into the system.
